The Vaccine Book by: Dr. Robert Sears, MD, FAAP

I am very excited to finally get a chance to tell you more about The Vaccine Book! I got to hear Dr. Bob speak at the LLL Conference this past weekend and he is so awesome you guys! Truly. He gave us a very balanced look at vaccines and the diseases that they prevent. If you are concerened about vaccines, go get this book asap. Also, Dr. Bob has a BLOG! http://www.thevaccinebook.com/ You can go there and ask him questions and he will answer you on the blog.

About the book:

  1. It is not an Anti-vaccine book. Why? He said because Anti-Vaccine books only reach a limited target audience. He wanted a book that gave a balanced look at the discussion so that more parents who need to make educated decisions will have the info they need to do so.
  2. Discussion of problems with current vaccine schedule.
  3. If you choose to vaccinate he tells you HOW to do it in the safest possible manner. The book includes: Safest Complete Vaccination Schedule (which means all vaccines are given, just not at the suggested time frame and no more than 2 shots given at a time to avoid Chemical Overload), and he includes a Selective Vaccination Schedule for parents who don't want to vaccinate at all but are worried about a few diseases specifically.
  4. This book will help you pick and choose which shots to get if you choose to only give some vaccines and not others.

Some recommendations by Dr. Bob: (per my notes)

  1. If you choose NOT to vaccinate, consider Breastfeeding for a minimum of 2 years, avoid Daycare settings, Church Nurseries and large play groups to reduce risk of certain illnesses/diseases.
  2. If you choose to vaccinate, use Ibuprofen or Advil instead of Tylenol/Acetominphen when you give something for pain. He says that Tylenol inhibits the body's natural Detox, is safer and more effective. Of course, you can only give Ibuprofen/Advil in babies age 3 mos. and up.
  3. Stop vaccinating if you notice developmental issues, vaccine reactions, post-pone more vaccines until you are comfortable with proceeding etc...
  4. Many of the vaccinations given include Aluminum. He called Aluminum "the new Mercury." And he added that with the regular vaccine schedule, your child could receive up to 4 shots at one time that all contain Aluminum. This leads to Chemical Overload.
  5. The shots still used today that have the SAME AMOUNT of MERCURY as before are: Flu Shots, Plain Tetanus, and Diptheria Tetanus. Mercury still does exist in some brands for other shots as well.
  6. Only give 1 "live virus" vaccine at a time. Give M-M-R seperate and so forth.
  7. Request Mercury-free Flu Shots and for HIB request ActHIB which has NO Aluminum.
  8. If you want to talk to your Doctor about vaccines schedule a seperate appointment to do so. The Dr. will not take you seriously if you try to do this at a Well-Check-Up.
  9. If you and your Dr. cannot agree, find a NEW DOCTOR!
  10. He will be listing on his blog, Vaccine Friendly Doctors in each state. So, if your Doctor is open to doing things differently tell them that they can link up to Dr. Bob's blog above. That way other parents can find Doctors that are willing to be flexible in their area.

Severe Reactions:

This is the reason that many of us question all of these vaccination in the first place. You will see it stated that the chance of having a Severe Reaction is 1 in 100,000 BUT Dr. Bob said if you factor in that each child will get approx 39 doses of vaccinations the REAL RISK is 1 in every 2,600 shots given to have a severe reaction.

Severe Reactions include: Seizures, brain inflammation, auto-immune reactions, Chronic Arthritis, nerve dysfunction, and temporary paralysis.

My brain was about ready to explode with all of the new information. I have read books, lots on the Internet, listened to friends regurgitate information that they've read, but when you have a Doctor stand right in front of you and tell you that you have a right to be concerned and that you have choices it is very affirming and empowering!!! We have a right to know what is being injected into our children and why. We have the choice to choose not to do that or to delay. Vaccinating is not all or nothing!!! You can choose to only give select shots or do all of the shots on a delayed/extended schedule or to do none at all. Do your research and choose what is best for your family. Ok. Comments open!!

I am so excited to read all of the input you have passed along! Everything that he said just rings true with what I have been thinking and feeling. I don't want to give up on vaccinating but I also want to be safe and aware of what I am subjecting my child to. So far I have done all shots except for Chicken Pox and the Flu Shot. I really do like the idea of spreading out the other vaccinations. I am excited that Dr. Bob has given some recommendations about how to time all of that. I wouldn't have any idea how to do it safely on my own. I am definitely going to check out his blog. Thanks for the great help! I am looking forward to learning more about your time at the conference.

I, too, am happy to hear this info. I didn't know about the Tylenol thing, I'll keep that in mind. I am going to link a lot of my friends to that blog. I have friends in every camp, but I think it's best to be informed and then make your own decisions.

Thank you so much for this. I am going to get that book. I am already set in my vacc. decision but I would love to be able to share it with other parents.

I love love love "Vaccinating is not all or nothing." I would spread that from the rooftops for the rest of my life if I could. My family has chosen not to vax and that's ok... but for families who aren't comfortable w/ that decision SELECTIVE VACCINATION IS ALLOWED!!!!!!!! Thank you to Dr. Sears (Jr) for reminding us all of that. Thanks 4 charing the wealth Eliz!

That is a great post! I may even actually pick up that book. I love it when a doctor tells the truth, and isn't wishy washy or one-sided.

thank you for the review! lots of good information here.
i agree that it doesn't have to be all or nothing, and certainly doesn't have to be on the "recommended" schedule. our family is proof of that.
this sounds like a good possibly balanced book. i look forward to chking it out. :)
